URUGUAYAN CULTURE : THE NIGHT OF NOSTALGIA
La Noche de la Nostalgia (The Night of Nostalgia) is an “oldies” dance celebration in Uruguay. It happens on the night of August 24th- the day before Uruguay’s Independence Day.
Numerous radio stations in Uruguay begin playing oldies music on August first to set the atmosphere for the nearing party night.
Noche de la Nostalgia gatherings are held in every part of Uruguay. Music from the 70’s, 80’s, and now the 90s is played. The first August 24th oldies party was held in 1978, and by the mid-1980’s it turned into an advertised occasion. Today the festival is as well known as New Year’s Eve.
Noche de la Nostalgia gatherings are held at restaurants and clubs. They also are held in unexpected venues – for example warehouses and vineyards. The gatherings are intricately arranged occasions, which ordinarily incorporate an expansive menu of good food and,drink. There are often DJ’s, mirror balls, and strobe lights.
Noche de la Nostalgia is a night to stay out late and have a great time moving to the rhythms of the past. Some Noche de la Nostalgia classics are Total Eclipse of the Heart, by Bonnie Tyler, and the Bee Gees, Staying Alive. Last Train to London (1979), by Electric Light Orchestra, is a symbol of Noche de la Nostalgia.
In Uruguay, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s Eve all come during the summer. Noche de la Nostalgia furnishes a festive occasion to break up winter.
